About Kelly
Kelly Tsang is a music engraver and copyist based in South-East London. Her most recent works include engraving Resonance from Ieva Dubova’s album Undercurrent and arranging a waltz Medley for Capella Edina. Previously, she has orchestrated Poulenc’s Novelettes for orchestra, and produced a critical edition of Bortkiewicz’s Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 72.
As a classical pianist, Kelly found an affinity towards orchestration since it provided an outlet for her to articulate how she imagines orchestral timbre when playing the piano. She is particularly interested in the soundworld of 20th century French music, with Maurice Ravel being one of her inspirations.
Kelly graduated with first-class honours at Newcastle University, musical analysis and orchestration. By combining these two forces, she investigated musical form in Ravel’s Sonatine by orchestrating the music. Afterwards, she pursued further research into the aesthetics of timbre in her MMus Musicology degree at University of Manchester, studying music engraving with Beethoven scholar Barry Cooper and orchestration with Joshua Brown.
She is currently a freelance orchestral librarian and has collaborated with Salford Symphony Orchestra and Capella Edina, where she is responsible for score acquisition and copyist tasks.
